Candace Bushnell: Sex & the City Review – Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury – Feb 2024

The oestrogen levels were high for this one: a pleasant enough night out for the girls with a few reluctant husbands dragged along. ★★★☆☆
Entertainment ★★★☆☆
The set was appealing enough. Notice the steps down from both sides of the stage – I was rather hoping that Bushnell may coerce a heterosexual man onto the stage to try on some of the tantalisingly spotlit stilettos. Alas, aside from some quiz style ‘real or not real’ shoutouts from the audience about iconic moments from the TV series, audience interaction was at a minimum.
Star Power ★★★☆☆
For ardent Sex and the City fans, who no doubt have purchased the extra meet and greet package, getting the chance to meet Candace Bushnell offers a rare glimpse of an American feminist icon. Canterbury has yet to be taken in by this wave of glamorous city energy, as the upper circle remained closed, and there were ample seats spare in the stalls and circle. Bushnell was slick and well-rehearsed, although I couldn’t help thinking that a little more audience interaction would make the show feel less like a rerun, and more of an intimate evening with a star.
Value ★★☆☆☆
Tickets are around the £30-40 mark which sounds reasonable but bear in mind that this is a short show. The runtime is 1 hour 25 minutes including a 20 minute interval: so you are getting about an hour’s worth of show time. I have seen many more evening with… one-man/woman shows that have offered much more entertainment for a similar price. Probably not worth travelling far for this one. You’ll get home early for bed though…
